Gut 20.000 Menschen in und um Amstetten führen ihr Konto bei der Sparkasse der Stadt Amstetten. Die Bank ist klein genug, dass die Kollegin im Nachbarort ein Gesicht hat, und alt genug, dass sie 2024 ihr 150-jähriges Bestehen gefeiert hat. Rund 65 Beschäftigte, sechs Geschäftsstellen, ein Einzugsgebiet mitten im niederösterreichischen Mostviertel.
Was die Bank tut, lässt sich an ihren Kunden ablesen. Am Schalter geht es um Konten, Sparen und die Finanzierung der ersten eigenen Wohnung. Ein Stockwerk weiter sitzen die Firmenkundenbetreuer, die sich um die Handwerksbetriebe, Ärztinnen und kleinen Unternehmen der Region kümmern, für die ein Kredit oft über Wachstum oder Stillstand entscheidet. Wohnraumfinanzierung ist ein Schwerpunkt, das Geschäft mit Klein- und Mittelbetrieben und Freiberuflern ein zweiter.
Getragen wird das von den rund 65 Beschäftigten. Neben der Beratung in den sechs Geschäftsstellen braucht eine Bank auch Leute im Rechnungswesen, im Kreditmanagement, in der IT und im Backoffice. Das sind Berufe, die man in einer Stadt wie Amstetten selten vermutet, die es hier aber vor Ort gibt. Wer neu anfängt, lernt das Handwerk in einer überschaubaren Organisation, in der die Wege kurz sind.
Die Sparkasse gehört in gewisser Weise sich selbst. Eigentümerin ist die Sparkasse Amstetten Privatstiftung, die Bank arbeitet also eigenständig und nicht als Außenstelle eines Konzerns. Zugleich ist sie Teil der österreichischen Sparkassengruppe rund um die Erste Group. Von dort kommen die Produkte, die IT-Systeme und die Marke eines großen Verbunds. Die Banking-App George stammt aus diesem Netzwerk, das gemeinsame Ausbildungsangebot ebenso. Die Entscheidungen aber fallen weiter in Amstetten.
Dass die Verbindung zur Stadt keine Marketingfloskel ist, steht in der eigenen Geschichte. 1874 nahm die Sparkasse am Hauptplatz ihre Arbeit auf, zweimal die Woche gingen dort die ersten Spargroschen über den Tisch. Später hat sie den Bau des Amstettner Krankenhauses mitfinanziert und Geld in Kanalisation, Wasserleitungen und ein Elektrizitätswerk gesteckt. Den Sitz hat sie bis heute am selben Platz.
